Every great outdoor story starts with a confident sentence. Ours was: “It’s only 0.8 miles.” What follows is a trip report from Scenic Miscalculations, our collection of funny hiking and camping shirts for people who take the scenic route on purpose. Mostly. Vintage-park graphics, very serious maps, and one questionable decision per design.
Saturday, 7:10 a.m. — Packed light
The plan was minimalist. No bulky tent bag, no snack cooler, no “just in case” anything. Our hiker left the trailhead bent nearly double under the one thing he did pack: the entire sun, strapped to his back like a very warm backpack. Lighting: excellent. Snacks: none.
That’s the Packed Light tee. No tent. No snacks. One sun. A funny hiking shirt for the friend whose packing list fits on a sticky note.
9:30 a.m. — The road (allegedly)
Getting to the trail was its own adventure. The navigation app said “you have arrived,” and technically it was right: the station wagon was parked on top of a needle-sharp peak with no road anywhere in sight. Great view. Questionable route. See the Great View tee for the full summit-parking experience, or the Scenic Detour tee, where one bold road makes a complete loop and the camper rides along upside down. Totally intentional.
12:15 p.m. — Shortcut found
Here’s where the map came in. Trail 7B, the vintage trail map promised, was only 0.8 miles. It also ran in a confident dotted line straight through the middle of the lake. Our hiker trusted the dots. What remained afterward: one snorkel, one floating bucket hat, and a strong opinion about cartography.
The Shortcut Found tee is for every hiker who has said “I think it cuts through here.” Trail 7B. 0.8 miles. Mostly underwater.
3:40 p.m. — One bar short
Damp but determined, our hiker needed to send one message: “running late lol.” Three bars of signal. Then the fourth bar, the one that actually sends texts, disappeared. So he kept climbing. Look closely at the mountains on the One Bar Short tee and you’ll see they’re a phone signal icon, with our hiker standing on bar three, phone held high. Elevation: still searching. No service.
7:55 p.m. — Tent pitched
Camp at last. The tent went up fast, proudly and, as it turned out, very high. A 40 mph gust lifted it clean over the lake like a kite, stakes still in the ground, our camper holding the line. Campsite: elevation rising. The Tent Pitched tee is a funny camping shirt for anyone whose setup has ever been described as “ambitious.”
Sunday — Caught nothing, saw everything
The last morning was quiet. A fishing line went out at sunrise and, instead of a fish, hooked the sun itself. Nobody caught dinner. Everybody caught the view. It’s on the Caught Nothing tee. And on the drive home, at the official scenic overlook, our traveler studied the map so hard he never turned around to see the enormous mountain lake behind him. A 360-degree viewpoint. Zero degrees seen. That’s the Scenic Overlook tee.
Why our funny hiking shirts look like old park posters
Scenic Miscalculations borrows the look of vintage national-park art: bold shapes, calm skies, maps that look like they know what they’re doing. Then the joke sneaks in on the second look. The palette is sun-faded Ivory and deep Blue Spruce, like a trail sign that has seen some things. And De Kleine Baas, our tiny boss emblem, rides along on every design, usually the only one who read the map correctly.
The tees are Comfort Colors 1717: heavyweight, garment-dyed cotton with a relaxed unisex fit, printed front and back. Each one is $39.99 and printed on demand after you order. Find your fit in the size and fit guide before you hit the trail.
Gifts for hikers, campers and road trip optimists
Funny hiking shirts make easy gifts for outdoorsy people, because every outdoorsy person has a story that matches one of these designs. Pick by personality:
- The ultralight packer: Packed Light.
- The “trust me, it’s a shortcut” friend: Shortcut Found.
- The one who always needs signal at the summit: One Bar Short.
- The camper with ambitious tent skills: Tent Pitched.
- The patient angler: Caught Nothing.
The whole trip is waiting in Scenic Miscalculations. Rather stay in? The Social Lag Department has approved that. Out after dark? Midnight Errands has your back. Great views. Questionable decisions. The map makes no promises.
